After a day filled with road rage, I came back home fuming at the lack of ‘road sense’ of my fellow commuters. Or, don’t I have the necessary skills? What transpires on the roads is very different from what the rule books of traffic dictate. What if, I could rewrite the traffic manual based on what happens? How to interpret what you see? Here are a few observations:
- Honk at red lights, people unnecessarily stop at them, you can get your way..
- You see those two amber lights to the sides of the headlight.. They are for decorative purposes only.. Not something you use..
- Meaning of Red light is subjective. If you see a policeman manning the juncture it means stay. If no, it means go..
- You can drive as haphazardly as possible as long as you have ‘yes, it’s my father’s road’ written on your back bumper/mudguard..
- Driving at night time in the city? Always use high beam – the only way to blind the person coming from opposite direction..
- Crossing the road at night? Do so in the most dimly lit section of the road so as to ensure maximum fatality..
- Always overtake from the left. Anyways, we don’t give way to the right.. (Don’t you know overtaking from the right is the rule?)
- Do you see those cordoned-off pieces of land on both sides of the road (of course they are not on every road), they are called ‘footpaths’, it’s for us drivers to bypass traffic when in a jam. Please feel free to use them..
- Want to cross the road? Sure, just raise your hand in a stop gesture and walk away. This signal entitles you to ‘nawabigiri’. All vehicles will have to stop to let you go no matter what their speed is..
- Got into a fight? No problem. You can stop and argue at the center of the road. Either people will stop to see the ‘tamasha’ or find a way around you..
- Helmets are for people with heads, not for us..
- Don’t know which turn to take, no problem, you can stop in the middle of the road and consult your map..
- Do you know why ambulances have sirens.. We neither.. Don’t bother about giving way..
- I hate the ad, ‘Roads are filled with idiots’. How dare they call us drivers, idiots even after we followed all the above rules?
- Accident on the road, no problem, please stop your vehicle and stare. It helps the victim..
